Press Release: Opportunity DC Celebrates Primary Victories by Every Council Candidate the Coalition Endorsed

DC Voters Side with Pragmatic Leaders Pinto, Trayon White, and Felder to Move the District Forward

All three of the candidates that Opportunity DC endorsed for DC Council won their primary races on Tuesday: incumbent councilmembers Brooke Pinto in Ward 2 and Trayon White in Ward 8, as well as Wendell Felder in Ward 7. All three candidates are well-positioned to prevail in November’s general election.

Malcom Fox, Executive Director of Opportunity DC, said, “The primary victories of Brooke Pinto, Wendell Felder, and Trayon White represent a mandate from voters on both sides of the river to move DC forward in a more practical, less ideological direction. Tuesday’s results reinforce our diverse electorate’s preference for pragmatic leaders who will bring more housing to the District, support DC’s small businesses, remove regulatory obstacles that discourage local entrepreneurs, and improve DC's competitiveness within our region. Leading up to and following November’s election, Opportunity DC looks forward to working with these dedicated public servants to realize our shared vision for a thriving and inclusive District of Columbia.”

WARD 2 WINNER: Councilmember Brooke Pinto

Councilmember Pinto’s lack of opposition and overwhelming primary win reaffirms her constituents’ confidence in her leadership, which extends beyond her representation of Ward 2. Since her election in 2020, Councilmember Pinto has been a steadfast advocate for public safety and economic growth. Her Secure DC public safety package, which garnered unanimous Council support, and the BEST Act, which simplifies business licensing and reduces fees, have made significant strides in addressing crime and fostering entrepreneurship. Opportunity DC appreciates Councilmember Pinto’s focus on fiscal responsibility, which is essential to keeping DC attractive for residents and businesses alike.

WARD 7 WINNER: Wendell Felder

Wendell Felder bested a crowded field to continue the legacy of Councilmember Vincent Gray. As an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner with a strong background in public service, healthcare, and higher education, Felder’s practical vision for revitalizing Ward 7 resonates with voters. His commitment to expanding the police cadet program and supporting small businesses aligns with Opportunity DC’s mission of promoting equitable economic growth and expanding entrepreneurial opportunities.

WARD 8 WINNER: Councilmember Trayon White

Councilmember Trayon White’s primary win is a testament to his effective advocacy for Ward 8 and the impact of his initiatives. Councilmember White’s efforts in securing small business grant funding and promoting career and technical development have been pivotal in supporting entrepreneurs and residents in his ward. Programs like the DC Dream Grants and the Community Investment Fund have provided essential resources, reinforcing Councilmember White’s alignment with Opportunity DC’s policy goals.
