Dear Supporters,
I am reaching out to you today to highlight an urgent issue that could have a devastating impact on the health and prosperity of the District of Columbia.
House Republicans have passed a budget resolution that includes major changes to Medicaid funding, potentially reducing DC’s reimbursement rate from 70% to 50%. This change would cut $1.1 billion in local DC funds and $2.1 billion of program funds to local hospitals, universities, and providers across the District every year.
Why should you care?
Health Care Shortage: A reduction in the federal Medicaid match (known as FMAP) would lead to a 40 percent cut in funding for DC doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, potentially reducing services and endangering the well-being of District residents.
Economic Impact: Reduced federal funding for health care in the District will require our local officials to pull money from other essential services that make DC an attractive place to live, work, and visit. A weakened health care system can also deter private investment, impacting the District’s overall economic vitality.
Public Safety: Medicaid funding from Congress helps address poverty, addiction, and mental illness in our neighborhoods. Cuts in these critical areas could undermine initiatives to make DC safer for everyone.
Education: High-quality health care is essential for student achievement and a productive workforce. Many DC families rely on Medicaid for health care.
Take action:
The Federal City Council is leading an effort to urge Congress to protect the District’s 70% federal Medicaid match.
Please add your name to the community letter to Congress – today. Time is of the essence. The federal budget process is moving quickly.
By standing together, we can send a strong message to Congress that investing in DC's health care is investing in the future of our nation’s capital.
Sincerely,
